On the byroad between Copenhagen and Roskilde, you will find Sallie’s Restaurant & Snack Bar, founded in 1955 by American Sallie Zimmerhackel - and still a very unique time warp.
The décor, style and food are still as they were in the 1950s, greatly inspired by Sallie’s childhood in Denver, Colorado. As the first person ever in Denmark, Sallie imported the cheese burger and today, large parts of the dishes on our menu are directly inspired by what Sallie served back then.
You can enjoy Sallie’s Original Cheese Burger, various steaks, fish ‘n’ chips, pulled pork, Sallie’s American Style Barbecue Ribs and a number of other dishes. Vegetarian dishes are also available.
Sallie's Original Burger and milkshakes
Among our beverages, we have various high-quality milkshakes, not least Sallie’s Original Coffee shake, which journalist Lise Nørgaard was offered when she visited the place for the daily newspaper, Politiken, in 1955 at the opening of the establishment. The article from back then now hangs on the wall. It gives a real sense of the unique character which Sallie’s Snack Bar was - and still is.
Over the years, the restaurant has been through many updates to follow with the times, but up to the 60th anniversary in 2015, we completed a radical “old-fashioned” modernisation.
We started completely from the beginning - studied everything we could from photos, historical material and accounts from guests and friends of the establishment who knew Sallie and frequented the place when, as something totally different and modern, it was opened on a bare field in Albertslund in 1955.
We ended up ripping everything out of the restaurant and then rebuilt from the ground up. Bigger windows were installed so they brighten the slightly dark and intimate 1950s style on the walls and ceilings.
